March 2025: Please disregard the temporary test art!!
Hey there, I'm Carol! I'm a romance writer and digital artist. I'm a passionate character-oriented designer and OC hoarder. I write queer-centric stories, make dumb little games, and I create comics, banners and character sheets.
The Carol Scarlette platform is the author-artist pseudonym for Caroline J. Roth, where I advocate for causes I care about, such as LGBTQIA+ advocacy and neurodivergent inclusivity.

Do not scrape my content for generative AI training.
Any and all efforts to use my content across all platforms as fodder for AI training will be seen and treated as theft, and disrespect of my creative rights.
I do not use generative AI content in my workflows. All my platforms and content were created by authentic human means.
I explicitly and irrevocably disallow the scraping and aggregated data processing of the following forms of my content: my artwork, images, photographs and other static visual media; my audio, music, and video content; as well as my fiction and non-fiction writing found across all platforms.
My content shall not be used as language-learning-model training data for: creating website templates, creating resumes, creating blog posts, creating social media profile content, creating methods to cheat on tests.
This applies to all my content, as well as content that is traded for goods and services. (Non-commercial or otherwise.)
Non-commercial use of my content requires transformative interpretation of my work, and clear credit to this carrd site.
Commercial use requires my informed consent and permission; Use of my work in AI models is still disallowed, regardless.
My contact page is here and my stance on generative AI is here.
My Stance on Generative AI.
TL;DR: AI content is cheap, low-effort plagiarism.
AI generated text is not original text.
AI generated art is not "art."
I do NOT use AI-generated materials in any of my content.
You're free to do what you wish; I'm not your mom and I don't care what you do. But please respect yourself and your reasoning skills.
Please don't use my content to train AI models. Stance here.
My Stance.
I do not agree with the monetization of AI generated content, or claiming it as original content. I do not agree with the scraping of art, audio, video footage, code or text without the creator's consent or appropriate compensation. I do not agree with aggressive copyright breaching or corporate theft of the intellectual property of creator made content. Human-made content.
I am opposed to the violation of user privacy. I'm opposed to the buying and selling of userdata for training learning language models. If it's not optional or opt-in, I disagree with it.
What "AI Content" i'm talking about.
I mean Generative Artificial Intelligence tools in order to output content what was not created by a real human person with real, authentic human skills.
This includes text and coding (ChatGBT, Google Gemini, Copilot, etc)
Images (DeepAI, DALL-E),
As well as audio or video (Sora? Suno?)
Also AI chatbot sites for solo roleplaying,
And the use of AI in note-taking and productivity management systems
What Generative AI Is:
Generative Artificial Intelligence as seen on Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Bing Copilot, Claude, etc, work thusly: they are pattern recognition machines that I believe use mathematical weights to parse through enormous amounts of content. When a prompt is fed to the machine that has a Language-Learning-Model, it outputs a response from an enormous compilation of sources. I don't believe it has technical cognitive reasoning.
It gives the illusion of understanding, when it explicitly does not. It is not a search engine with an index, it is not a library of information that it can recall, and it doesn't understand the outputs of words it provides. This is why it fails at math, broadly speaking; It's trained on public user data from humans across the internet.
ALL LLM'S require OBSCENE amounts of USER MADE DATA. User made data that was taken from billions of people across the internet around the world, likely including you. When you abide by the terms of service and privacy policy to a platfrom, you may inadvertantly give them permission to allow them to scrape your data to train to an LLM, where any and everyone may have access to generate content.
((Character AI, CHAI, ChubbAI, JanitorAI, SpicyChatAI, PERCHANCE and other "roleplay" gen-ai sites function the exact same way.))
It is everyone all at once, it is nobody all at once. It is a thoughtless machine that returns an "answer" to your "inputs," no different than a calculator. "Hallucinations" are just inaccurate word predictions in it's response.
I'm really trying to kill the magic here, because there was a more peaceful time when we didn't have these technologies as crutches. It worries me deeply.
Where I began.
My writing journey began in 2010, in my early 20's, four years after the release of the Amazon Kindle. I hit my first writing milestone in my mid-20's in 2018, where I wrote 120,000 words in Scrivener in under three weeks because my internet was out.
I spent late nights chugging Pepsi Zero (yuck) and pouring over W3Schools and HTML dog, leanring about web coding. I was voraciously curious about the world and the tools at my disposal. I was hungry to learn and put into practice my own new skills. I got upset, and I made plenty of mistakes. Things often didn't work. But I kept going.
I bought a Wacom tablet in 2017. I started practicing digital art through out 2018 onwards, unaware of "generative ai." ChatGPT was being spoken about outside of my circles, and I thought it was going to be a fad. I looked up tutorials on youtube, on DeviantArt, I had sketchbooks upon sketchbooks in real life, and collections of pencils and erasers. I had artbooks and lessons books.
This was long before I even knew what "generative AI content" was. When I checked it out in 2020, I wasn't impressed. I thought it would be a fad. I hate that I was wrong. I didn't have a use for it. I did check up on it every few years.
My Content is Original.
I am strongly opposed with using generative AI to "support" my own REAL writing or REAL art. It was always a waste of my time to try and misuse generative AI in these ways.
I do not use Generative AI in any aspect of my work, and I have no intention of doing so. Generative AI in any form has no place in my creative workflow. Not in my writing, not in my art.
Transparency.
October, 2024: Since 2022, I have engaged with ChatGBT for various non-serious topics, and Copilot when searching for obscure articles. I also engaged with Google Gemini.
I also explored "roleplay chatbot" sites for entertainment purposes, in 2024. It is not a good excuse and I recognize that, but It is non-serious use. ((I am aware of the enviormental impact this could have, and I am very guilty about it.))
((Here I was roleplaying, pretending that I had a "group chat" with two different characters even if that wasn't really the case. I pretended to text these characters as though one gave the other a means to contact me. This was because I was bored and feeling silly.))((There is also a depiction of a private bot of a character from MiiSide. The roleplay with this bot was incredibly boring.))
AI Generated images, video, audio:
I have tried ai generated images on a few platforms. My own real art is imperfect, but trying to generate images with AI has been abysmally unsatisfying and exhausting. I ALWAYS get better results hand drawing all my shit myself. AI art has no place in my workflow.
I was never interested in making ai generated audio or video content, as I find them disturbing and offputting. I may have come across ai generated songs, and I find this incredibly frustrating.
Staying Accountable.
I do not have a practical use for AI Generative workflows or AI supported technologies in ANY parts of my creative process. I do not use AI to automate my productivity system. While I do not care what other people do with AI tools or software, I avoid such apps for my content.
I have used Google Gemini on and off again from January of 2025 through May 2025, only for complaining into a void. It is personal, but self-destructive and has been a hindrance on my personal growth. I am trying to stay away from it.
I also was pulled into the bad habit of ai roleplay chatbot site use since July of 2024, after hearing that a writer peer used it too. I find all my "roleplays" incredibly UNFIT and abysmal for serious inspiration. This use has dropped my writing productivity enormously, and I regret this so much.

🎮 Web and Game Dev
I've been working in the creative-writing industry since 2010, only three years after the first release of the Amazon Kindle and during the eBook hayday. I have extensive practice in fiction writing, with a special interest in fantasy, romance, paranormal romance, slice-of-life, mystery and erotica.
As a self-taught digital artist, I acquired my first bootleg tablet in 2014, and migrated from PaintNet to Krita in 2019 after I earned my first Wacom tablet. I have been creating "comics" as a hobby since before 2009 in my youth, with far more archaic materials of such primitive times, such as pencil and paper.
Muddling my way through the nightmare that is game development and front-facing web-design. On-and-off again practice in 3D modeling.
Lurker in open-source communities and general appreciator of open-source works. Experience with Linux Distributions such as Debian, Ubuntu and the derivative, Linux Mint. Also user of FireFox and derivative, Floorp, as well as LibreOffice, Krita, ShotCut and Audacity. I have a resources page HERE.

BLOCKING: TLDR
🚨 Content Warning! 🚨
Discussion of tough topics in this section.
Click HERE in order to return to the main page.
Blocking is based on actions.
- Not based on who someone is,
- Not based on what their beliefs are,
- Not based on fiction that someone consumes.
⛔ I do not do "DNI" lists. ⛔
Life is more nuanced than that.
Here is a quick overview on blocking.
Types of Stuff:
Real-life interactions: (blocked, reported)
The sharing and discussion of
CSAM material Map/NoMap/ProMap discussionDiscussion of
abuse crimes againstanimals Unsafe individuals with a history of
s-xual violence, includingsharing revenge p-rn Ideological incompatibilities with my values
Such as those who discriminate (including far-right and
Trump Supporters )
Fictional Content that Triggers me: (very uncomfortable, blocked if found)
Fictional underage:
Sh-tacon, l-licon, furry cub yiff Fictional depictions of
grooming / molestation Excessive/disparaging depictions of
su-cide/selfharm
Fictional Content that bothers me: (More nuanced... muted, avoided, etc)
Kink:
Snuff, Vore Pain-Aversion:
Physical violence during sensually-intimate scenesTriggering:
Noncon Uncomfortable:
Feral yiff (consensual adults)Uncomfortable:
In/cestuous relationships (consensual adults)Dubcon
Kink:
Slut-shaming during sensually-intimate scenes (regardless if consensual or not)
Actions, not arbitrary hate.
Blocking is based on someone's actions.
---> Example: I might not block someone purely for ideological differences, but I will block someone who harasses others with discriminatory language.
---> Example: I might not block someone who simply enjoys dark fictional content, but I will block someone who makes fun of others who are more sensitive or have boundaries.
---> Example: I might not block someone simply because they like some kind of fictional content that triggers me. I might block someone if they intentionally use that trigger against me to upset me.
☢ I manage myself. ☢
I read and abide by trigger warnings and tags.
I read and respect Do-Not-Interact lists of other users.
I manage my own triggers.
Fiction is fiction.
I understand creators have their own autonomy and reasoning for creating content I might find objectionable.
Understanding my Boundaries:
Sometimes I block to keep myself safe.
Please understand that blocking is my last resort.
I usually do this first:
---> Avoid triggering content in the first place
---> Mute tags first
---> Mute users first
I value connection, humanity and empathy.
There is nuance in life, which is why this I don't consider this a "DNI" list.
Remember: blocking is based on actions.
Having arbitrary lists of "people who are bad" makes no sense to me, when we normally actually mean "people I disagree with or make stuff I don't like.
Bullying, harassment, discrimination and hate is found in all communities, no matter the ideological beliefs of that community.
This includes political alignments, advocacy efforts, and in fandom related communities.
When I block, I'm blocking because someone was being rude, unreasonable, malicious or argumentative. It could have been for a variety of reasons. Discrimination, spamming, hate, what ever else.
Sometimes it's also because they were sharing content that was triggering for me, either intentionally or unintentionally.
Intention matters.
Real Life Boundaries.
(Explained.)
⛔ I do not do "DNI" lists. ⛔
Life is more nuanced than that.
This section is unpacks and elaborates on my boundaries.
Blocking is based on actions.
- Not based on who someone is,
- Not based on what their beliefs are,
- Not based on fiction that someone consumes.
Actual Concerns: (Blocked and reported.)
Animal abusers:
---> Users who discuss in-real-life criminal acts against animals.
Child molesters:
---> Users who discuss/share real-life CSAM material
---> Map/NoMap/ProMap discussion
Dangerous individuals:
---> People with a criminal record involving s-xual violence.
------> This includes those who share revenge p-rnography of their exes,
------> This includes those who leak compromising content of their exes,
------> This includes those who maliciously create deepfakes for the purpose of p-rnagraphic use.
NOTE: This is for real people having real discussions.
Why?: As a recovering survivor, I am staunchly against the exploitation of vulnerable individuals such as our youth and our animals. It is grotesquely upsetting to harm our most vulnerable dependents; doing such selfish crimes against a helpless individual is a severe lack of empathy and humanity.
I feel just as strongly for protecting girls and adult women of all ages and all walks of life from harm, discrimination and harassment.
Solidarity is very important to me, and I want to stand alongside all of those who need help, support, validation and encouragement.
For Mutual Safety/Comfort: (Usually blocked.)
Ideologically Incompatible:
---> Far-right,
---> Neo-nazis,
---> White-supremists,
---> Maga / Trump Supporters
---> Terfs/Swerfs
Discrimination:
---> Homophobia.
---> Transphobia.
---> Racism.
---> Sexism.
---> S-xual violence used as humor that punches down on women/victims.
NOTE: This is for real people having real discussions.
Why?: I am intolerant of discrimination, bigoted views, hate and bullying.
I value empathy, connection, philosophy, advocacy and understanding. Having a narrow-minded world-view and potentially hurting my friends, family or myself is not something I'm willing to compromise on.
Respecting Others: (Muted if found; blocked if they interact with me.)
Users who are underage. I don't interact with minors.
Users who have "NSFW do-not-interact" in their bio.
Users who declare they are Safe-For-Work in their bio unless they interact with me first.
I avoid users who don't have a defined age range.
Sex-negative users who make-fun of or down-talk adult themed content or creators.
Why? I try to be tactful but my fictional content is not family-friendly or appropriate for all audiences. I want to respect adult users who don't wish to be exposed to erotic, not-safe-for-work content. It is also illegal for underage users to access content they're not allowed to consume.
It would make me very uncomfortable and put my platform in jeopardy if my content was accessed by those who were not allowed to see it.
I do not take responsibility for vetting users who engage with my content on my platforms. I only take responsibility for tagging my content.
Users who are not supposed to see my content that engage with it anyway are crossing my boundaries.
Bullying and harassment is not activism, nor is it a mature or conductive way to share your ideological beliefs by bothering people you hate online.
I cannot speak on the different communities I'm apart of. But I'm empathetic.
Being uncomfortable, uninformed, or ignorant is different from being bigoted. I do not witch-hunt people for mistakes or blame others for not understanding something fully.
Blocking is a last resort. I mute, unfollow, or avoid first. I value empathy, humanity and forgiveness first, which take time and maturity to practice.
Making space for others while remaining disengaged can be respect, and admitting "I don't know" or "I don't understand" can also be respect.
ON FICTIONAL CONTENT.
(Explained.)
⛔ I do not do "DNI" lists. ⛔
Life is more nuanced than that.
This is for fictional content.
Blocking is based on actions.
- Not based on who someone is,
- Not based on what their beliefs are,
- Not based on fiction that someone consumes.
OBJECTIONABLE FICTIONAL CONTENT that makes me Very Uncomfortable: (blocked if found.)
Underage Sh-tacon (for titillation).
Underage L-licon (for titillation).
Furry yiff: cub content (for titillation).
Fictional depictions of grooming and molestation. (Lack of consent.)
Excessive/negative depictions of su-cide/selfharm
Even if I find the afore-mentioned content objectionable, I understand when these criminal behaviors are depicted in fiction by fictional characters who are not real, it's not hurting a real person or causing real trauma. If it's not allowed in the TOS or guidelines of the community I find it on, it will be reported to that platform.
This is here to keep me safe from my own personal traumas and triggers. There is no moral implication if this content or its creators gets blocked by me.
Why? I am disturbed by fictional depictions of these objectionable fictional contents.
I understand fiction is fiction and I understand creators have the freedom and choice to create what they want. This includes processing their own traumas in their own ways.
I manage myself and my own triggers. I avoid trigger warnings that are not good for me. I always start by avoiding content that's not meant for me first.
Gray Areas.
Fictional Content that Usually Bothers Me: (muted, avoided; sometimes blocked)
From MOST upsetting to LEAST upsetting:
Snuff, Vore
Physical violence during sensually-intimate scenes (especially if not consensual)
Noncon (especially if violent / down-talks victim)
In/cestuous relationships (consensual adults)
Feral yiff (consensual adults)
Step/cest (consensual adults)
Dubcon
Slut-shaming during sensually-intimate scenes (regardless if consensual or not)
This is subjective!! This is subjective!!! These fictional things bother me specifically, most of the time, but not nearly as badly as the above-mentioned boundaries.
Life is nuanced and complicated. I'm not saying there will be exceptions for all of these. I'm saying that things aren't black-and-white.
Why? This list is a bit more complicated to explain. My main through-line is consent. But I understand in fiction, characters are not real and fictional situations can be a safe sandbox to explore outcomes that are not possible in the real world.
This list is inconsistent. Some content I've blocked. Some content I've simply ignored and avoided even if I thought it was strange. Some content has disturbed me. Some content made me uncomfortable but I understood the intent of the creator. Some content was created by a creator I knew and sympathized with, and stood in solidarity with their healing journey.((Supporting someone who creates dark content doesn't mean condoning what is depicted in the dark content.))
Sharing, enjoying or creating content that features these fictional depictions won't automatically mean being blocked by me. Blocking is a last resort, and I manage my own triggers.
It's okay. It's not the fault of creators if I misjudge my own limits. I leave-be fictional content that I disagree with.
DISCLAIMERS.
What I'm NOT talking about: (literally doesn't bother me)
Real life BDSM practices between consenting adults
Real life pup-play/pet-play between consenting adults
Real life bedroom roleplay
Little-space or age-regression (which is safe-for-work and entirely unrelated to bedroom intimacy activities)
Age-Play roleplay in the bedroom between consenting adults
Consensual adult activities that aren't my business not covered here in this disclaimer
Fictional mythical beasts that can consent (Centaur, werewolf, satyr, minotaur, whatever-the-f-ck)
Age-gaps between adults (fictional or otherwise)
DILFS/MILFS (fictional or otherwise)
The god-damned need for conflict in fiction sometimes, so we add dark topics or antagonistic villains to it
Fictional content: age-appropriate relationships between same-age characters in a YA setting
QUICK OVERVIEW.
I'm not a proshipper.
I'm NOT an antishipper.
Harassment is not activism.
Criticism is not censorship.
I reject arbitrary fandom labels.
The strict "good VS bad" black-and white-thinking is an unhelpful, reductive binary.I believe it's strictly meant to exclude and bully, on BOTH SIDES.
My platform is an inappropriate place to debate fandom.
Fandom is an inappropriate replacement for politics.I'm a survivor. I value connection, empathy and humanity above all else.
I understand the hate, the hurt, and the stigma that both sides suffered.
I understand the goals. It's perfectly understandable to want the internet to be a safer place, and hold malicious individuals accountable. It's also perfectly understandable to want to express fiction freely, in a relatable, visceral manner that's authentic and honest, without fear of censorship.
If you wish to understand my lived-experience better and to understand why I feel this way, you're welcome to continue and reach your own conclusions.
You're free to interact with me however you wish, no matter how you identify yourself. The labels to describe your stance in fandom has no bearing on whether or not if I interact with you, how comfortable I feel around you, or whether or not if I'll exchange money with you for your goods or services if such things are offered.
My Stance: I am against hate.
Understand: Harassment is not activism. (Both sides do this.)
Understand: Criticism is not censorship. Criticism will happen online, whether it's solicited or not.
Fiction is fiction; I feel all users should proceed at their own discretion and heed warnings if present.
Intention matters. Being held accountable shouldn't mean deplatforming a creator or censoring the internet in hate campaigns.
Silencing creators is not holding creators accountable. Robbing creators of income is not holding creators accountable. It's hate.
My Conduct
Discretion: I avoid tags and content at my own discretion.
Abiding by the Rules: Violations to TOS-policies or laws will be reported as needed; regardless if it's fandom related or not.
I avoid, mute and block to keep myself safe at my own discretion. (Blocking is a last resort.)
Disengagement from something is not always a moral indicator.
All are welcome to contact me directly,
if there is any misunderstanding, and connection is desired.
My doors are open.
It's okay to be honest. To explain your beliefs. To desire connection. To want to feel safe. To feel validated in your own beliefs. To find community.
Please offer that civility and decency to neutral and uninformed parties. Not everyone is educated in the same experiences and not everyone is informed or aware of what you've gone through.
I am using strongly worded language in this section, but please understand that I am curious, empathetic and willing to listen.
Life is nuanced: I value connection.
Fandom should not be a replacement for politics. Fandom used to be fun, safe and welcoming space for me, but it hasn't been. I would love civility. YOU are the representative of your beliefs, and alienating others who are misinformed or out of the loop won't help you or your cause.
If you take issue with who I interact with online based on fandom-drama, or assume that I condone everything that someone else does based on the fact I've interacted with them: I am not responsible for the assumptions you make about me. It's your job to find the actual facts.
I don't care for fandom labels. My platform is not an appropriate place to debate fanfiction. I trust that those who engage with me have the dignity to handle themselves responsibly.
Bad faith takes without engaging with me directly are not worth my time or peace. As said previously, all are welcome to contact me directly if there is any misunderstanding.
My Understanding of: Proshipper Facts
Proshipping: a stance against the censorship of fiction in fanworks. Reblogged Infopost from former Anti.
Boundaries: Users who align with proshipper beliefs still have squicks and boundaries: Proshipper Carrd.
Purpose: allegedly to empower content creators with the freedom to explore fiction, including dark or taboo topics in fiction.
Methodologies: Usually good about clearly tagging their content and providing trigger warnings.
Nuance and Literacy
Claims: the main philosophy is opposition to fictional censorship, and they seem to believe they advocate for anti-harassment.
NOTE: This is not the case; see video evidence below.
CLARITY: Antishippers have hijacked the term a few times to bastardize the movement; it did not originally mean "problematic ships."
Trauma Processing: while there is overlap in discourse against kinkshaming, not all dark content is s-xually motivated. Some want a safe fictional space to explore trauma.
Current Issues.
DEBUNKING: A vocal minority have perpetuated rumors that were false: Debunking the Needle Cookie Incident
Silencing People of Color: BOTH sides of fandom discourse have problems with ignoring the voices People of Color and Biracial folks; "Healthy Criticism in Fandom" by Stitch on Teen Vogue and "Purity Culture in Fandom" by Princess Weekes.
All or Nothing: sometimes objectionable, bad-faith fetish fictional content like
sh0tacon, l0licon, cub content or feral-yiff is considered under the umbrella of proshipping.
My opinions.
I fully empathize with the need for a free space to express fiction safely, without fear of censorship or judgement.
I agree that connection should be able to be made between a creator and it's reader/viewer and that community should be made around healing or sensual freedom.
However, this should be an open, on-going discussion, which invites and welcomes all people; including people of color, including people of different cultures, including neurodiverse people, including LGBQIA+ people, and former anti-shippers who are liberated from indoctrination of a toxic community.
Abiding by the guidelines of a platform is not the same as the argument around creator censorship, or freedom of speech. Different platforms will have different guidelines. Different user-made communities (subreddits, facebook groups, discord groups, etc) are going to have different guidelines.
A person who comes across an untagged fanfic and they read it and express that it needs a certain triggering tag is not hate or judgement.
Ageism is a pointless debacle. Proshippers and antishippers come in all ages.
I find it ironic that the people who cling to their dark tropes, stomaching the most violent fictional depictions imaginable, often lash out at people who express even the slightest discomfort or criticism.
However, I empathize. Getting bullied or dogpiled by an anti and their friends they coerced into mobbing someone is blatant cyberbullying, and it was wrong. I'm sorry if it happened to you.
Cyberbullying back or being defensive and unwelcoming doesn't help the goal of a censorship free space for creators. It's alienating when the echo chamber of uncritical acceptance seems closed off.
The communities I found seemed focused solely on making mean-spirited memes about the people they disagreed with, and sharing/whinging about troll comments that were upsetting. To me, it felt like It was thinly veiled call-out posts, exactly the same as antishippers.
If there were proshippers who were more nuanced or felt more empathetic, they were very quiet and didn't speak up or speak out against the popular things to do. I did not seem to find any as of March 2025.
On the Anti-Facts.
What I've Understood:
Agenda: Antishipping is based on the "Fiction Affects Reality" agenda.
Beliefs?: They seem to believe that creators should be held accountable for the content they create, and consumers of dark content should also be accountable, but the reasoning changes,
---> SUCH AS: depicting some sort of objectionable crime in fiction means that the creator or consumer condones that crime,
---> OR, more nuanced adults in this space may worry about how dark content may desensitize users, and subconsciously give them permission to do immoral acts in real life.
EXAMPLE: It's similar to how old generations blame-shift the cause of violence onto video games.
--> Info here: "Violent Video Games Do Not Cause Violence."
Anti shippers believe there are boundaries that content creators shouldn't cross. These boundaries are dictated by the comfort of the hypothetical user, not by narrative nuance, the agency of the creator's self expression, or the creator's lived experience.
This fandom policing is done under the guise of activism and inclusivity. The desired outcome is to make online fandom spaces safer for vulnerable groups (normally children) by sanitizing the kind of entertainment media allowed online.
As we'll see below, this has not been the case, and antishippers have developed echo chambers amongst themselves.
Criticism.
They have bullied children, people of color and LGBTQIA+ creators off their platforms.
Most callouts against "problematic fandoms" are simply clickbait to generate hate.
Stipulations.
This reminds me a lot of conscious consumerism, (article here,) which in of itself not a bad thing. It's also fair and understandable to want to feel safe and validated in a fandom space, and to know you can trust the creator. A creator with malicious intent or ulterior motives may be very discouraging. Here are some examples: there were a few thought-pieces on BBC's "Sherlock" where the last season made fans of the show the butt of the joke. Here is an essay by HBomberGuy and SarahZ. Also reddit thread. There is also a more recent issue of a plush toy company trying to create LGBQ+ and disability inclusive toys, but disparagingly talk about such marginalized groups behind closed doors.
Perhaps the anti-shipper movement started with good intentions and I'm simply failing as a journalist. It's not wrong to have clear boundaries. It's good to be honest and authentic up front. Not everyone will agree and not everyone will get along. What has made my research difficult was how it felt like a gate-keeping community and that the goalposts often changed. There was an all-or-nothing, "you can't be nuanced, you can't say sorry, and if you do you did it wrong" sort of intensity that made it incredibly difficult to find serious, objective sources from proud and informed antis.I found scrappy small disconnected groups that weren't real communities, and it was hard to tell which were genuine and which were just trolls.
My own confusions and fallacies. (No one will read this.)
Should all content be family friendly only? (All songs, books, movies, shows; all libraries would have to burn their offensive books if so, right? Text books about history, bibles, news papers, anatomy drawing books, fashion books?)
Should all content be devoid of flawed, relatable characters who experience character growth?
Should all characters be good, perfect and happy at all times? (By extension, only mary-sues are allowed?)
Should all stories be devoid of romance?
Should all stories have zero conflict?
What's the point of stories if no one can relate to it?
Why are only fanfiction writers and small creators targeted when most tag their shit resonsibly and do a damn good job of respecting other's spaces more than half the time?
Why aren't production companies or media distributors held accountable?
Why isn't positive change reinforced and praised? Why do we not uplift good examples of what we're meant to be doing?
Why is the only method to "keep vulnerable users safe" is to tear down creators? (No matter if they're marginalized or young in some way?)
Why is a child creator held accountable in the same way that an adult is, when they don't know any better?
Why is solidarity or empathy seemingly not an option?
Why is it so unwelcoming?
Why is it so hostile?
My opinions.
A fanfiction writer who is working through trauma and writing a dark fanfic and tagging it as such has zero malicious intent.
Whether or not if that person's reader has malicious intent reading their content is not the fault of the creator.
Tearing down their whole platform and silencing their ability to share their work is not keeping the minors or vulnerable groups safe on the internet. It's hate.
Uncritical approaches and generalized blanket statements about what is and isn't okay in media is an immature lack of nuance and media literacy. I'm sorry.
Conclusion...?
TL;DR: I understand.
It's valid to feel triggered by upsetting content.
It's valid, albeit sadly unrealistic, to want the internet to be a safer space. It's also valid to want creative freedom and agency in fictional content. Fiction that's honest, authentic and relatable.
It's valid to work through trauma and get catharsis in fiction.
It's valid, okay and healthy to explore and push boundaries in the safety of fiction, where no one is real and no one can get hurt.
I felt alienated and unwelcomed, in both Proshipper spaces and other spaces online.
It was hostile and unfriendly, no matter which side I found myself. Both sides felt immature, disrespectful and fixated on hate and bullying.
There were no clear efforts on how to make the internet safer, or how to stand up against censorship. (Beyond petty bullying.)I felt forced to choose, and chose wrong, no matter what.
I am not a proshipper. I am not an antishipper.Life is more nuanced than this.I'm an artist, a writer, an advocate and a survivor.
I have complicated feelings I want to express through dark fiction,
But I also have sensitivities I want to keep myself safe fromI hope this is enough to earn me humanity.
